Customize Your AI: OpenAI Unveils Groundbreaking New GPT Technology

Introduction

OpenAI is an artificial intelligence research laboratory based in San Francisco. Founded in 2015, OpenAI's mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. In 2021, OpenAI introduced DALL-E for generating images from text descriptions, followed by GPT-3 in 2020 and ChatGPT in 2022 which is capable of natural conversation.

ChatGPT is built on GPT-3.5, the latest version of OpenAI's natural language model. Since launching in November 2022, ChatGPT has become immensely popular for its ability to understand questions and provide coherent answers on a wide range of topics.

Announcing GPTs

On November 6, 2023 OpenAI introduced new functionality to ChatGPT called GPTs. GPTs allow users to create custom versions of ChatGPT that are tailored for specific use cases or tasks. This could include building a GPT to learn the rules of a board game, helping children practice math, or assisting with a business' unique needs.

GPTs provide more control and customization for users. With GPTs, anyone can build their own AI assistant without needing to code. The process involves having a conversation with ChatGPT, giving it instructions and additional knowledge, choosing capabilities, and more. This allows users to shape the model's behavior and train it on niche topics and tasks.

GPTs represent a major expansion of ChatGPT's capabilities. Now, instead of having one generalist model, users can create specialists - custom AI models designed for specific goals. This unlocks many new potential applications across education, gaming, business, and more.

Ease of Building GPTs

One of the key highlights of GPTs is the ease with which anyone can build their own GPT without needing to code. The process to create a custom GPT involves the following simple steps:

Starting a Conversation - Users start by having a natural conversation with ChatGPT to explain the purpose and capabilities they want for their custom GPT.

Giving Instructions - Next, users give step-by-step instructions to ChatGPT on the knowledge and behaviors expected from the GPT.

Providing Extra Knowledge - Users can provide supplementary materials like documents, data, or media to enhance the GPT's knowledge.

Choosing Capabilities - Finally, users select the capabilities like speed, creativity, trustworthiness, etc. that they want the GPT to have.

With these four simple steps of conversation, instructions, knowledge, and capability selection, anyone can build a customized GPT tuned to their specific needs and use cases without writing any code.

Example GPTs

OpenAI has provided some example GPTs that can be used and customized by ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise users initially, with plans to expand access to more users over time. These example GPTs showcase the potential for creating specialized AI assistants tailored to specific topics or uses cases.

Some of the example GPTs cover domains like:

Customer support - designed to understand common customer service scenarios and provide helpful responses

Coding - optimized to generate, explain, and analyze code

Math and physics - trained extensively on math and physics knowledge to solve complex problems

Fantasy gaming - knows extensive lore about popular fantasy game settings

Users can take these example GPTs and further customize them by having conversations, providing additional instructions and information, and setting capabilities. The provided examples act as a starting point so users don't have to start from scratch when building their own specialized GPT.

According to OpenAI, these example GPTs will continue to expand into more domains and use cases over time. The examples showcase what's possible with GPT customization and will help more people understand the potential before building their own.

Customization

One of the most exciting aspects of GPTs is the increased ability for customization that it provides. Many ChatGPT users had been requesting more control and personalization options, and GPTs deliver on that. With GPTs, users can shape AI behavior to align closely with their own needs and preferences.

Rather than having one single general ChatGPT model for all users, GPTs make it possible to develop specialized versions tailored for specific use cases. For example, an individual could create a GPT to help with their math homework, or an enterprise could build one that understands industry terminology and company processes. The possibilities for customization are vast.

Users can customize GPTs by providing instructions, having conversations, and giving the AI extra knowledge that fits their particular situation. This hands-on approach produces AI that feels more personal and relevant. OpenAI designed the GPT creation process to be intuitive even for non-coders, putting more control into the hands of regular users.

GPTs unlock new levels of specialization. Their customizable nature empowers people to shape the AI to their needs rather than being forced to use a one-size-fits-all model. This increased control over personalization is a major benefit of GPTs for both individuals and organizations.

Community Involvement

One of the most exciting aspects of GPTs is the opportunity for community involvement in building and shaping them. OpenAI believes that the most powerful and useful GPTs will come not just from their own team, but from builders and creators across the world. That's why they are actively inviting participation from people with all levels of technical skill in the process.

With GPTs, even those with no coding experience can start creating customized AI. All it takes is having a conversation with ChatGPT, giving it instructions, and providing any extra knowledge needed. This opens up AI customization to whole new audiences. OpenAI wants to empower everyone to take part in shaping the future of AI.

By tapping into the creativity and problem-solving skills of the community, OpenAI hopes to see GPTs developed for an incredible variety of domains and use cases. This also allows for more diversity of perspectives to influence AI development. They believe that community-driven GPTs will better serve people's needs and interests across the globe.

To support this, OpenAI has launched the GPT Store to help creators share their work. They hope this exchange of ideas and innovations will accelerate progress in developing safe and beneficial AI. With more minds involved, the future possibilities for GPTs are exponentially greater.

GPT Store

One of the exciting announcements around GPTs is the launch of the GPT Store, where creators can publish and potentially monetize their custom GPT models. The GPT Store provides a platform for developers and creators to showcase their unique GPTs to the world.

By publishing a GPT in the store, other ChatGPT users will be able to easily discover and utilize your model. As the creator, you have the ability to choose whether to make your GPT free or paid. If you charge for access, OpenAI announced they will share a portion of the proceeds with you as the developer. This provides an avenue to potentially earn money based on usage of your custom GPT.

Having a centralized store allows custom GPTs to gain exposure, makes them readily accessible to users, and incentivizes creators through potential monetization. With easy discovery of tailored GPTs for specific use cases, the store empowers the community to build and benefit from the expanding capabilities of this technology.

The GPT Store signifies an important step in democratizing and commercializing AI through easy access to customized models. While details are still limited, the store promises to further unleash creativity and innovation in how people utilize and interact with GPTs.

Privacy and Safety

One of the priorities with GPTs is ensuring user privacy and safety. When chatting with a GPT, your conversation data is not shared with the GPT creator. This allows you to have full control over your data when interacting with different GPTs.

OpenAI has also implemented new systems for reviewing GPTs. Before a GPT is published publicly, it goes through checks against OpenAI's content policies. This review process aims to catch any potential issues with privacy or safety ahead of a GPT's release.

By separating chat data from GPT creators and proactively screening GPTs, OpenAI wants to empower users to safely shape AI while maintaining personal privacy.

Developer Connections

Developers can expand the functionality of GPTs by making APIs available for them to access. This allows the integration of external data sources or enables real-world interactions.

For example, a developer could connect a GPT to a weather API so it can provide up-to-date weather forecasts. Or they could connect it to a database of products so the GPT can answer questions about inventory and pricing.

By leveraging APIs, developers have the power to customize GPTs with domain-specific knowledge and capabilities beyond just conversational AI. The potential use cases are endless - GPTs that can control smart home devices, trade stocks, query medical databases, and much more.

OpenAI wants to empower developers to stretch the boundaries of what GPTs can do. Easy API integration paves the way for more advanced and practical applications of this technology across industries. It unlocks the ability for GPTs to act on and interact with the real world in meaningful ways.

Enterprise Customers

Several large enterprise businesses have expressed interest in the customization that GPTs enable, seeing it as a way to align AI capabilities more closely with their specific needs. Among the early customers taking advantage of GPTs are Amgen, Bain, and Square.

For example, Amgen plans to build a GPT to help its scientists accelerate drug discovery by summarizing research papers and generating hypotheses. The biotech company believes a customized model fine-tuned on scientific literature could significantly enhance its R&D efforts.

Consulting firm Bain aims to create an internal GPT to provide tailored advice for its case interviews and strategy projects. By training the model on Bain's proprietary methods and past work, the company hopes to gain a competitive advantage. The GPT could help serve clients in a more customized manner aligned with Bain's approach.

Financial services provider Square plans to build a GPT capable of answering complex questions about payment processing, accounting, and other financial services matters. By creating a model highly specialized in fintech and Square's offerings, the company seeks to provide faster and more accurate support to its small business customers.

These examples demonstrate the eagerness of major enterprises to tap into the customization unlocked by GPTs. The ability to align capabilities closely with internal data and specialized use cases is seen as a major benefit across industries and applications.
